When is the Best Time to Schedule Your Senior Session?

One of the first questions I get when a senior (or their parent) reaches out about booking a portrait session is: “When’s the best time to do it?”

And honestly? The short answer is: whenever feels right to you.

But there are a few things to consider that can help you decide when to schedule your senior session—and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Let’s break it down.

🍂 Fall Senior Sessions 🍂

Fall is a fan favorite, and for good reason.

Cooler temps make it much more comfortable to shoot outdoors (no one likes sweating through their outfit in July).

Gorgeous fall colors—think golden leaves, soft light, and cozy, earthy tones—make for timeless, warm photos.

Less busy schedules. Fall usually lands before the madness of college applications, spring sports, prom, and graduation events. It’s a great time to slow down and capture this milestone.

Private school deadlines. If you attend a private school, keep in mind that many yearbook photo deadlines come in the fall or early winter. Scheduling your session in late summer or early fall ensures you’ll have plenty of time to choose your images and submit them.

🌸 Spring Senior Sessions 🌸

Spring is all about new beginnings—and it can be the perfect time to shoot your senior photos, too.

Flower blooms and lush greenery are stunning in portraits. Parks, gardens, and natural spaces come alive in the spring.

Your Story, Your Way. By spring, most seniors know what’s next—college, a gap year, or something totally unique—and we can incorporate that into your session. Bring your acceptance shirt, college banner, or anything else to show off where life is taking you.

Fresh energy. You’re about to graduate! It’s a season full of excitement and anticipation, and that shows in your photos.

So… When Should You Schedule?

It really comes down to preference. Some seniors love the cozy, golden feel of fall and the feeling of being less rushed. Others want that fresh, bright spring energy. Some want both—and we can absolutely make that happen.

One important note:

Senior sessions are meant to capture who you are in this season of life—your style, your energy, your story right now. That’s why I recommend scheduling your session during your senior year, not before. You change so much from junior to senior year, and your photos should reflect the real, current you.

Here’s what I recommend:

1) Book early (no matter which season you choose). Prime spots fill up fast—especially for fall.

2) Think about your schedule. Do you have sports, theater, or other time commitments? Pick a window where you won’t feel rushed.

3) Plan around your school’s deadlines.

Still not sure which season is right for you? I’d love to help you figure it out. Reach out and let’s talk through it!
